Established in 1535, the National Mint of Mexico is the oldest Mint in North and South America. The Silver Libertad, first issued in 1982, is based on the Centenario gold coin that was manufactured between 1921 and 1947. The initial Libertad’s design featured the Mexican angel of independence, Winged Victoria (or Victory) holding a wreath of laurel and a broken chain, to commemorate Mexico’s liberation from Spain.

The modern coin’s obverse contains Mexico’s national seal, featuring an eagle perched on a cactus carrying a snake in its beak. The inscription above the seal says “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.” Ten other seals surround the central seal, representing Mexico’s provinces.

The reverse of the Libertad displays the Victory Angel standing in the middle of two volcanoes. They are named Popocatepeti and Iztaccuhuati after two lovers from pre-Columbian lore. Inscriptions read “2 ONZA,” “PLATA PURA,” “2017,” and “LEY .999.”
