The Royal Mints Queens Beast series was created to celebrate the heraldic beasts in both silver and gold bullion. The gold coins are available in both 1 oz and 1/4 oz weights. Highlights:
The Queens Beast series will eventually contain ten coin designs. The Red Dragon of Wales coins are just the third release in the series. The coins in this listing were granted a grade of MS69 by the NGC. The near-perfect grade means that the coins will have all of their full, original mint luster with a maximum of only two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule hairlines and contact marks.
Obverse
On the obverse of every single coin in this series is the fifth-generation image of Queen Elizabeth II created by Jody Clark in 2015. At the time the portrait was created, the Queen was 89. Clark, at just 33, was the youngest engraver to ever create an image of Her Majesty for British coinage.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2017 British Queens Beast Dragon 1/4 oz Gold Coins is the Red Dragon of Wales. The image is taken from the coat of arms of Llewelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native prince of Wales. The image was used again by Henry VII on his ships.
History
The first release in the Queens Beast series was the Lion of England, and it was quickly followed by the Griffin of Edward III. Stay tuned to see what the next seven coins in the series will showcase.
