The Canadian wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) is the largest land animal in North America, with full-grown males weighing as much as 2,000 pounds. Known for their large shoulder humps, thick dark fur, and sturdy frames, these incredible creatures were once nearly wiped out in the early 20th century. Today, you can find the 2017 Canadian Buffalo 1/4 oz Gold Coin available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2017 Canadian Buffalo 1/4 oz Gold Coin arrives inside a protective plastic flip to maintain its condition. The coins design includes carefully crafted radial lines, which cover the background field on the obverse and frame the design field along the edges on the reverse.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2017 Canadian Buffalo Gold Coin displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Shown in right-profile relief without a crown, this artwork was created by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt in 2003 for the Royal Canadian Mint and has been widely used ever since. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, D.G. REGINA, and 10 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2017 Buffalo 1/4 oz Gold Coin, a wood bison is depicted roaming the plains. As plant-eaters, these animals help maintain the grasslands by eating grasses and sedges, creating open areas where many other species thrive. Today, wood bison populations are mainly protected in areas like Wood Buffalo National Park, located across Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The inscriptions read CANADA, 2017, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/4 OZ OR PUR.
History
Compared to their plains relatives, wood bison have taller shoulder humps, darker and shorter fur, and a more noticeable beard. These features help them move easily through the forests, wetlands, and meadows of Canada’s northern wilderness.
