2017 marked just the second time the Chinese Mint had produced its primary bullion coins in Gram weights instead of Troy ounces. The mint made the change after 2015, with the 2016 coins rolling out the new Gram weights. Each of the five coins was replaced, with weights changing from 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz to 30 Gram, 15 Gram, 8 Gram, 3 Gram, and 1 Gram. Obverse

The Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests is depicted on the obverse of all 2017 Chinese Panda 8 Gram Gold Coins. This is the primary building located in the Temple of Heaven Complex. The broader complex was constructed in south-central Beijing between 1406 and 1420.

Reverse

Each year, Chinese Panda 8 Gram Gold Coins have a new image of the Giant Panda species on the reverse. The 2017 coins feature an adult panda sitting on its backside with a long bamboo shoot in its paws.

History

The shift from Troy ounces to Grams in the weight of Chinese Panda Gold Coins resulted in minor changes to the size of most of the coins in the collection. In the case of the Chinese Panda 8 Gram Coin, the change from 1/4 oz to 8 Grams resulted in the coins weight actually increasing from 7.7758 Troy ounces to an even 8 Grams and its diameter increasing minimally from 21.95 MM to 22 MM. The thickness remained the same.
