Coins from the 17th century are hard to come by, but today, you can get a restrike of a coin that was originally produced in 1617 from the Royal Dutch Mint. The 2017 Netherlands 1 oz Silver Lion Dollar Restrike is available today from Provident Metals.
Coin Highlights:
The coins in this listing come in a capsule. They ship with a display box and a Certificate of Authenticity. Since these are recreations of coins from 1617, they are 400th-anniversaryreleases. With only 5,000 minted, these are fairly rare reproductions of the Dutch lion daalder coins. Today, we call these restrikes Silver Lion Dollars due to the brilliant lion designs on both faces of the coin.
Obverse
The obverse shows a depiction of a knight standing with his shield. The shield features the image of a lion on its hind legs, also called the rampant position. Engravings on this side of the coin include, MO. ARG. PRO. CONFOE. BELG, which is short for Moneta Argentea Provinciarum Confoederatum Belgicarum, which means Silver money of the Province of the Netherlands. The letters TRA, which represent Utrecht, are also on this side. A beadwork design surrounds the design.
Reverse
The heraldic lion design from the shield on the front of the coin is enlarged for the reverse image. The lion is shown rearing up on its hind legs surrounded by a beadwork pattern. You will also find the engravings 2017 and the motto of the United Provinces, which is CONFIDENS. DNO. NON. MOVETVR, meaning Who trusts in the Lord is not moved.
History
Established in 1567, the Royal Dutch Mint was originally owned by the Dutch state. However, in 2016, it was purchased by Heylen Group. Now, the bank mints coins for various foreign national banks that are part of the Eurozone. It also strikes coins for countries like Latvia, Guatemala, and Honduras.
