The elk, also know as the wapiti to the First Nation tribes of Canada, is the largest deer species in the world. Elk can be found throughout the North American continent, as well as Eastern Asia. Elk feed on grass, plants, leaves, and bark.

Obverse

The obverse face of the coin bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown in right-profile relief in the design created by Susanna Blunt in 2003. Queen Elizabeth II has been on the obverse of all Canadian coinage since she was coronated in 1952.

Reverse

An image of a large elk can be seen dominating the foreground of the reverse of the 2017 Proof Canadian $125 Elk 500 Gram Silver Coin. The elk is shown with its massive head and antlers raised up to the sky as it lets out its bugle call, which will echo in the woods.

History

Opening in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was originally an offshoot of the Royal Mint in Great Britain. The original RCM facility opened in the capital city of Ottawa. When demand got to be too much, a second location was opened in Winnipeg to increase production capacity.
