In 2017, the Lunar Series II proof gold coins consisted of three coins in total: two fractional-ounce coins and a 1 oz gold coin. The Perth Mint capped the individual mintages for the coins at 6,000 for the 1 oz option and 8,000 for each of the fractional-ounce coins. There was an additional three-coin set that included these 1/10 oz gold coins that had a limited issue of 1,500 as well.

Obverse

On the obverse of all 2017 Proof Australian Lunar Rooster Gold Coins, you will find the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted here in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Believed to be Her Majestys favorite tiara, the vast majority of British currency denominations have her image wearing this particular tiara on one side or the other. This portrait was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.

Reverse

The reverse field of 2017 Proof Australian Lunar Rooster 1/10 oz Gold Coins comes with the design of a single rooster standing on one leg in left-profile relief. The rooster is set amongst sparse bamboo shoots and leaves in this reverse design. Created by Ing Ing Jong, the design includes inscriptions of the Chinese symbol for the rooster, Year of the Rooster, and the P mint mark of the Perth Mint.

History

The Lunar Series II collection picked up where the first series ended with a fresh Year of the Rat design in 2008. The series ran through the 2019 Year of the Pig design before the mint launched an entirely new series in 2020 with the new Year of the Rat.
