Scotland adopted the Unicorn as a heraldic animal several centuries ago. The mythical unicorn is often thought to have originated as a result of being misidentification as other animals in the wild. Some have theorized that this includes an antelope or the rhinoceros. The Unicorn of Scotland was first introduced to the British arms when James VI of Scotland united the two nations and took the throne in the 17th century and became James I of England.

The Unicorn was first brought to the Royal Arms by James VI of Scotland after he took the throne of England. The unicorn is depicted supporting the shield of Scotland, which shows a rampant lion. The shield has remained unchanged since the 13th-century when Alexander III reigned.

James VI was known for uniting the crowns of England and Scotland after Queen Elizabeth I died without having an heir to take the throne after her. This brought the Unicorn of Scotland to the Royal Arms, and resulted in the creation of a design that features the Lion of England and Unicorn of Scotland each supporting the shield.
