History

This 2017 release is the second coin release for the Nocturnal By Nature series. This Royal Canadian Mint collection features multiple encounters with nocturnal wildlife known to be native to Canada. The little brown bat is a Canadian native and lives in areas spanning from the Great Lakes to the Arctic tundra. The bat navigates and finds insect prey to eat at night by using echolocation. This coin collection presents face-to-face encounters to the viewer with the use of skillful artistry, black plating, and detailed engraving.

Obverse

The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse of the 2017 $20 Proof Canadian Nocturnal By Nature Brown Bat 1 oz Silver Coin. There are also two inscriptions: ELIZABETH II and D.G. REGINA. The portrait of Her Majesty has been used on many different coins around the world that have been manufactured and distributed from different mints.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin shows the face-to-face encounter with the brown bat of Canada. The design was originally created by artist Calder Moor and showcases the bat flying high in the night against the moon in the background.
