The Edmonton Oilers franchise was established in 1972, as the Alberta Oilers in the World Hockey Association (WHA). The franchise ultimately became a part of the NHL as the Edmonton Oilers in 1979.

The obverse of all Passion to Play Series coins features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majestys image was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, and is accompanied on this face by engravings of her name, the nation of issue, year of issue, and the phrase D.G. Regina.

Reverse

On the reverse of each 2017 Proof Canadian Silver Passion to Play Edmonton Oilers Coin is the image of children playing a pick-up game of hockey on an outdoor rink, with one child playing with a puppy while two other pups run in the background behind the net. The entire image on this face is colorized, and includes the Edmonton Oilers logo in the upper-right field.
