Obverse

Queen Elizabeth IIs portrait is featured on the obverse of all Canadian coinage. This image was created by Susanna Blunt, a Canadian artist, in 2003. The Queens image has been used on Canadian coinage since she was crowned back in 1952. She is now the longest-reigning monarch in the history of Great Britain.

Reverse

The reverse side of these coins showcases a Murano glass tree. Created by master glassmakers Giorgio and Bernardino Vio of Murano, Italy specifically for use on these coins. In addition to the glass piece, you can also see pine trees covered in snow. There is even a horse-drawn sleigh and a cabin in the background.

The glass pieces vary slightly from coin to coin. This is because they are handmade. Each coin is unique due to this glass feature.

History

The Royal Canadian Mint was opened in 1908 to give Canada the ability to mint their own independent coinage. The first location was opened in Ottawa, Ontario, and a secondary facility was opened in Winnipeg, later on, to help meet the increasing demand for the beautiful coins the mint puts out each year.
