Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse side of the 2017 Republic Ghana African Leopard 1 oz Silver Coin. This design is the fourth-generation British image created for the Royal Mint of England in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. Perhaps the most widely-used effigy of the Queen during her reign, it depicts the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This is believed to be her favorite piece from the Crown Jewels. One of the most stunning elements of the design of these coins is the use of a leopard print background field behind the Queens effigy on this face of the coin.
Reverse
An African leopard is shown on this side of the coin stalking its prey as it prepares to pounce. The leopard is crouched down very low amidst the tall grass and its mouth hisses as it prepares to strike at its prey and enjoy its next meal.
History
The Republic of Ghana is a former British colony along the western coast of Africa. From 1967 until its independence in 1957, it was known as the British Gold Coast. It took Britain nearly 100 years to establish this colony through battles with other European powers and resistance from local tribes.
