The obverse side of the 2017 South African Krugerrand Silver Coin includes a left-profile bust of Paul Kruger. This portrait was designed by Otto Schultz and featured first on South African Pound gold coins in the 1890s. The image captures the famed Boer figure from South Africa who first led the republic as part of a triumvirate through the 1870s and 1880s, and was later elected the first President of the South African Republic. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include Suid Afrika and South Africa.

Reverse

On the reverse face of 2017 South African Krugerrand 1 oz Silver Coins, you will find a depiction of the Springbok antelope. The antelope is shown in right-profile relief and was designed originally by Coert Steynberg. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read Krugerrand, 2017, and Fynsilwer 1 oz Fine Silver R1. These coins also have a 50^th Anniversary mark in the design field above the hindquarters of the antelope.

History

South African Krugerrand Gold Coins have been available as of 1967. From 1967 to 1980, the only coins available were the 1 oz gold coins. Starting in 1980, fractional-ounce gold coins were made available each year. While all of these coins are legal tender in the Republic of South Africa, only these South African Krugerrand 1 oz Silver Coins have a marking of the face value on the coin at 1 Rand.
