Obverse

The obverse side of the 2017-W High Relief 225th Anniversary American Liberty Gold Coin presents Liberty with African-American featuresa first in U.S. coin history. Her head is adorned with a crown of stars inspired by the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol building. The design was created by Justin Kunz through the Mints Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, a Sculptor-Engraver at the Mint. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, 1792, 2017, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The words 225TH ANNIVERSARY are engraved on the edge of the coin.

Reverse

On the reverse of 2017-W American Liberty 1 oz Gold Coins, youll find a bald eagle shown soaring in flight, wings extended and eyes forward. This powerful image was designed by Chris T. Costello of the Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso of the U.S. Mint. The coin is struck in high relief at the West Point Mint and includes a special edge inscription reading 225th Anniversary, framed by starsa feature seen only rarely on U.S. coinage. Inscriptions read UNTIED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD, 100 DOLLARS, and the W mint mark.

History

The U.S. Mint was created on April 2, 1792, with the signing of the Coinage Act during the presidency of George Washington. The Act established the first national mint, located in Philadelphia, which was the U.S. capital at the time. This development was a key step in forming an independent American economy, allowing the country to create its own coins instead of depending on foreign currency.
