Obverse

The national coat of arms for the Republic of Armenia is featured on the obverse of 2018 Armenian Noahs Ark 5 Kilo Silver Coins. This design incorporates the two most important heraldic animals of Armenia throughout. The Lion and Eagle support the national shield from the sides, while the quartered shield of the design features lions in two quadrants and eagles in the other two. At the center is a smaller shield with a depiction of Noahs Ark atop Mount Ararat. Inscriptions include Republic of Armenia, which is inscribed in both English (bottom rocker) and Armenian (top rocker).

Reverse

For the reverse design of 2018 Armenian Noahs Ark 5 Kilo Silver Coins, Eduard Kurghinyan depicts the famed ark as it floats on the floodwaters. The ark kept Noah, his family, and two of every animal species safe through 40 days and nights of torrential rain that drowned humanity and cleansed the Earth. When the rains stopped and the sun returned, Noah sent out birds in search of dry land. When a dove returned with an olive branch, as depicted in this design, he knew the waters had finally receded enough in some places. Later, the ark would come to rest on the peak of Mount Ararat. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read Noahs Ark, again in both English and Armenian.

History

Mount Ararat was, historically, located within the political boundaries of Armenia. Only recently, following World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, did the boundaries of southeastern Europe get redrawn. At this time, the border between Turkey and Armenia that had split the mountain was moved to place it entirely within modern-day Turkey.
