The ancient Chinese zodiac associates twelve animals to years on the astrological calendar. It’s believed that each person’s year of birth gives them the personality attributes of the animal tied to that year. The birth years for the Year of the Dog include 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, and 2018. People born in these years are said to be kind, loyal, and friendly.
The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The year of issue, weight, purity, and denomination are inscribed around the rim.
The new reverse design for the Year of the Dog features a German Shepherd and its puppy lying in the grass below Chinese peony flowers. Above, you’ll see the Chinese character for dog. This side also includes an inscription of “YEAR OF THE DOG” and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark.
The Perth Mint will only produce up to 300,000 Year of the Dog 1 oz silver coins. Production will cease once this mintage is reached or at the end of 2018, whichever comes first. This limited mintage is expected to make the 1 oz coin highly collectible.
The oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo weights of this coin will be produced with no mintage limit. Production will cease at the end of 2018, after which the Perth Mint will declare each coin’s final mintage.
A maximum of 100 10 kilo coins will be produced on a mint-to-order basis, with production ceasing at the end of 2018.
Each Year of the Dog coin will come in a protective plastic capsule as received from the mint.

I received this coin in a capsule and can not get over the beauty. This is my favorite dog design I have seen. The reverse proof like minting makes this one of my favorite coins in my collection and I plan on getting a few more beforethey disappear."
