Obverse
The obverse side of the 2018 Australian Dragon and Tiger 1 oz Silver Coin includes the image of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the sixth-generation depiction of Her Majesty on an Australian coin during her reign. It is based on the Jody Clark design created in 2015 for the Royal Mint of England and is modified to include the Queens neckline and shoulders, a first on Australian coins since 1966. The portrait shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown.
Reverse
On the reverse face of 2018 Australian Dragon and Tiger Silver Coins are a dragon and a tiger. The design is meant to show the balance that exists in the world between the two creatures. Within the concept of feng shui, the dragon and tiger combined together represent perfect balance. In this design, the two beasts circle each other with the tiger on the left of the design and the dragon on the right. There is a flaming pearl in the center, the pursuit of which represents the desire for infinite wisdom.
History
The Dragon and Tiger design is available for the first time in 2018 from the Perth Mint. Opened in 1899, the Perth Mint was originally built to join the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint in the Royal Mint of England system on the continent. However, it would go on to spend most of its history offering support to the coining of Australian denominations and eventually become a state-owned entity of Western Australia as a mint separate from Royal Australian Mint following the latters founding in 1965.
