Known for its high-quality silver and gold coins, the Perth Mint is back at it with the 2018 Australian Emu 1 oz Silver Coin. Like many of the other coin series from the mint, these coins feature a native animal species. Right now, you can purchase these coins in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Perth Mints new Silver Emu series marks the first new collection of coins for Australia since the introduction of the Silver Kangaroo in 2016. These coins, like their predecessors, feature .9999 pure silver.
Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is featured proudly on the obverse of these coins in right-profile relief. This image was created by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998. It is the fourth-generation image of the Queen to be featured on British coinage.
Reverse
On the reverse of each coin, you will see the image of the second-largest living bird by height. The emu is a species of flightless bird native to Australia. There used to be two different subspecies in the country that are now extinct. These two species were the Tasmanian and King Island emus. The image on the reverse of these coins shows the bird walking across the Australian Outback.
History
The Perth Mint was established in 1899 as part of the British Royal Mint refinery system in Australia. At the time, it was the third of three mints in the country made to produce coinage for Great Britain and its commonwealth countries. In the 1970s, the mint was sold to the government of Western Australia.
