The shield is topped with a helmet and features a single-bearded fig tree in the center with the Pride of Barbados flower in the two upper corners. The shield is supported by a dolphin fish on the left and a pelican on the right. A hand rises from the helmet holding crossed sugar cane stalks. This represents both the St. Andrews Cross as a nod to the British colonial history of the island and the prominence of the sugar industry in the nations history.
