Like most British sovereign coins, the obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth portrait of Her Majesty to be used on coinage during her historically long reign. The design, by Jody Clark, has recently been enhanced with a new guilloche design. The coin’s denomination is inscribed on this side.
The Red Dragon of Wales perches behind a shield on the reverse, recreating the third design in this 10-part Queen’s Beasts series on a new silver coin with a larger weight. The dragon represents sovereignty and power, and it is used in the emblem of Wales. Inscriptions include the beast’s name, weight, purity, and year of issue.
The Queen’s Beasts series of bullion coins was inspired by the 10 heraldic beasts that stood guard during the Queen’s coronation ceremony in 1953. Symbolizing power and identity, these 6-foot tall statues once lined the entrance to Westminster Abbey. Today, stone replicas of the beasts now stand watch over Kew Gardens in the UK.
