The obverse features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The inscriptions ELIZABETH II, CANADA 2018, D.G. REGINA (Latin for “By the Grace of God, Queen”) and 20 DOLLARS are also engraved on the obverse.
Designed by Jori van der Linde in a mosaic art style, the reverse features a cougar’s piercing gaze as glimpsed through a clearing in the woods. The wild feline’s iconic features are re-created through complex engraving that divides the image into segments resembling pieces of vibrant tile. From the dark opaque browns of the cougar to the glassy green hues of the surrounding forest, the Royal Canadian Mint’s proprietary Color Mosaic technology gives each color on the reverse a varying degree of translucence, like light filtering through colored glass – resulting in a beautiful work of art to hold in hand.
