Polar bears are found across the Arctic regions of five countries: the United States (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Greenland (Denmark), and Norway (Svalbard). These massive predators follow shifting sea ice as it moves through the Arctic Ocean, with the largest populations residing in places like Hudson Bay, the Beaufort Sea, and the Arctic Archipelago in Canada. Theyre also a common subject in Canadian coin programs, including this annual gold coin. Right now, 2018 Canadian Polar Bear 1/10 oz Gold Coins are available at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Comes with a protective plastic flip!
  • Unique polar bear design for 2018!
  • Contains 1/10 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • The face value of $5 (CAD) is fully backed by the Canadian government.
  • On the obverse is Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse features a polar bear walking along the Arctic landscape.

All 2018 Canadian Polar Bear 1/10 oz Gold Coins from Provident Metals come in a plastic flip for safe handling. Each coin also includes fine radial lines across the obverse background and around the rim of the reverse, providing both texture and enhanced security.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2018 Canadian Polar Bear Gold Coin, youll see a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This design is the fourth and final Canadian effigy of Her Majesty and was created in 2003 by artist Susanna Blunt. Unlike other portraits, this one shows the Queen without a crown. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, D.G. REGINA, and 5 DOLLARS.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2018 Polar Bear 1/10 oz Gold Coin displays a detailed image of a polar bear moving across an icy Arctic shelf. These creatures rely on the sea ice to hunt and travel, and their presence is closely tied to the health of the Arctic environment. The inscriptions read CANADA, 2018, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/10 OZ OR PUR.

History

Polar bears branched off from brown bears roughly 400,000 to 600,000 years ago during the Pleistocene period. This evolution happened quickly as some brown bear populations became cut off in northern areas during glacial ages. Those bears gradually adapted to life in icy conditions. Research shows that their shift into Arctic predators was driven by natural selection, giving rise to the specialized features they now rely on for survival on the sea ice.
