It was designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt. The design is just the second monarch portrait from a Canadian artist and the first since the reign of King George VI to depict the monarch without a crown.

Reverse

The bird has its wings stretched wide and its talons are extended and ready to capture its prey as it dives down silently. Snowy owls are born with black plumage that eventually turns to white as the bird matures. Adult males in the species are almost entirely white, while females are white with flecks of black in their plumage.
