Englands Royal Mint has been issuing coins since the 9th century and many of those designs remain icons in numismatic circles. Some of those designs have inspired modern recreations such as the Pobjoy Mints Isle of Man Angel Gold Coins. Inspired by the 15th-century English gold angel, today you have the chance to purchase the 2018 Isle of Man Angel 1 oz Gold Coin at Provident Metals.
The English gold angel coin was introduced in 1465 by King Edward IV and widely regarded as a continuation of the previous English gold noble coin issued by King Edward III more than a century earlier. The coins were inspired by the French angelot and issued originally with a value of 6 shillings 8 pence, though the value was adjusted several times during its nearly 200-year production run.
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of 2018 Isle of Man Angel 1 oz Gold Coins. Her Majesty has been depicted on the obverse of all British and Commonwealth coins since late 1952. This is an exclusive Pobjoy Mint design from Jody Clark and depicts the Queen in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.
One of the most powerful warrior angels, St. Michael was a leading figure in heaven and helped Gods forces defeat fallen angels and Satan. The archangel Michael is depicted on the reverse of 2018 Isle of Man Angel Gold Coins with a long spear in one hand and a shield with a cross in the other hand. He drives the spear into the neck of the dragon to end its life as it breathes fire at him.
The original English angel gold coins included a depiction of the archangel Michael slaying a dragon, but the design was flipped on the original coins with Michael to the left and the dragon right. A key element carried over to this coin is the use of a Viking-themed border design element. A monarchs image was not featured on the obverse of the original English angel gold coins, with the English instead using a depiction of a galley with the Kings arms on the sail.
2018 Isle of Man 1 oz Gold Coins are available with a protective plastic capsule and come in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
