The Mexican Libertad Gold bullion coin has a unique coining history. Though it has been struck every year since 2002, its production history before that is quite quirky. The coins were not issued in 2001, issued in 2000, and issued for four years in the early 1990s from 1991 to 1994. Prior to that, the coins had been issued only once in 1981, with only three of the five weights available.

Obverse

The reverse side of the 2018 Mexican Libertad Gold Coins offers 11 images. The primary design on this face of the coin is a depiction of the modern coat of arms for Mexico. It depicts a powerful golden eagle struggling with a serpent from its perch on a cactus branch. A cactus wreath frames the design from below and Estados Unidos Mexicanos frames it from above. There are 10 historic versions of the same seal around the outer edge of the design field.

The Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin is the leading gold bullion coin from the Mexican Mint. The series is based on the design of the Centenario 50 Peso gold coin issued by the mint in 1921 to mark the 100^th anniversary of independence.
