Montserrat is affectionately known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean for the same reason that Ireland bears that name. The beautiful wave-splashed cliffs and lush green pastures of Ireland are matched in the Caribbean by those of Montserrat. Surprisingly, a good portion of the islands inhabitants have Irish heritage. When the British colonized the island, many Irish people came over as indentured servants, merchant sailors, or members of the Royal Navy. Upon first glimpsing the high cliffs and lush green forests of Montserrat, these Irish travelers referred to it as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean.

Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of the 2018 Montserrat Emerald Isle of the Caribbean Silver Coins. Her Majesty is featured here in the right-profile portrait created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint of England. In this image, she wears the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara and is flanked by fern leaves on either side.
Reverse
Images associated with the island of Montserrat are featured on the reverse side of 2018 Montserrat Emerald Isle of the Caribbean 1 oz Silver Coins. On this side, you will find the Union Jack flag of the United Kingdom along with the coat of arms for Montserrat. That coat of arms features the female personification of Ireland, Erin, along with the harp of Ireland.
History
The EC8 Series offers one design for each of the eight member nations featured in the collection, but that singular design for each nation is depicted on four different releases. Each design appears on a 1 oz silver bullion, 1 oz colorized silver proof, 1 oz gold bullion, and 1 oz gold colorized proof coin.
