Obverse

The obverse image is that of a Silverback Gorilla. While the image changes every year, in this image, you get a close-up look of a large male Silverback. There are two major species of gorilla: the western and eastern gorillas. However, there are four subspecies, including the mountain gorilla. Most silverbacks are included in the mountain gorilla group. Family units of gorillas are called troops, and there is only one silverback. The silverback earns its name as a result of the stripe of silver fur on its back that is a result of age.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 2018 Congo Silverback Gorilla 1 oz Silver Coin, you will see the official coat of arms for the Republic of Congo. At one point in history, this country was a French colony, but the seal shows a lion holding a torch. Elephants support the coat of arms on both sides.
