Each coin is packaged in its own plastic capsule for protection. Just 1,000 of these coins were struck in this size in 2018. The 1/10 oz coin had the highest mintage among that years Proof Gold Libertads.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 2018 Proof Mexican Libertad Gold Coin features Mexicos national coat of arms. Based on Aztec symbols from the Codex Mendoza, the image shows a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, devouring a snake. According to legend, this was the sign given to the Aztecs by their god, Huitzilopochtli, for where to build their capital. Inscriptions read ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2018 Proof Libertad 1/20 oz Gold Coin, the Winged Victory statue is shown in detail as it stands atop the Independence Victory Column. This view also includes the backdrop of Mexicos two prominent volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, adding depth to the historic scene. The inscriptions read 1/20 ONZA, ORO PURO, 2018 LEY 999, and the mint mark.

History

Standing tall in Mexico City, the Angel of Independence, or “El ngel,” was completed in 1910 to honor 100 years of the Mexican independence movement. Built under the direction of President Porfirio Daz, the column is topped with a bronze statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and is a lasting symbol of national pride.
