Proof Mexican Gold Libertads were originally introduced by the Mexican Mint in the 1980s, but it wasnt until 2004 that the full lineup of five coin sizes began releasing on a regular, annual schedule. Since then, these coins have been issued every year except 2012. Provident Metals now has the 2018 Proof Mexican Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coin available for purchase.
Highlights:
Each 2018 Proof Mexican Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coin comes in its own plastic capsule for protection. These coins showcase a proof finish with sharp frosted images set against bright, mirrored backgrounds. The 1/4 oz version had a mintage of just 1,000 coins in 2018, the same number as the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/20 oz coins. Only the 1/10 oz coin was struck in higher quantity, with a mintage of 1,500.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 2018 Proof Mexican Libertad Gold Coin displays the modern Mexican coat of arms. This image shows a golden eagle perched on a cactus as it wrestles a snake using its beak and talon. The bird is shown in profile with wings spread, a symbol deeply rooted in Mexican culture and mythology. Inscriptions include ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2018 Proof Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coin shows Winged Victory, inspired by the statue found atop the Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. This figure is modeled after Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and features a winged woman holding a wreath in one hand and broken chains in the other. Inscriptions read 1/4 ONZA, ORO PURO, 2018 LEY .999, and the mint mark.
History
This particular 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad was first released in 2004. Earlier proof coins in the Libertad series had been struck in 1983 (1 oz) and 1989 (1/2 oz). When the program resumed in 2004, it introduced three new sizes1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 ozalong with reissues of the previous weights.
