Obverse

History

Though it may be hard to believe today, Mickey Mouse was not the first animated character to helm the productions of Walt Disney. That honor belonged to Julius the Cat and after him to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who was Mickey’s immediate predecessor starting in 1927 and possessed a similar color scheme and personality. Mickey came about as a replacement for Oswald when Universal Pictures seized creative control of Oswald, and starred in the first cartoon to include synchronized sound — Steamboat Willie— in 1928. It quickly became the most popular cartoon of its day, and this rest is history.
