Chiwoo Cheonwang is important in both Korean and Chinese cultural history. He was a real-life figure who was the leader of one of Chinas original three founding tribes. His forces were said to be the most effective on the field of battle as he is rumored to have gone an entire decade without losing a battle. As the myth of his power grew, he was assigned supernatural powers. People began to believe he could control the weather, summoning dense fog and rains to alter the battlefield to his advantage.

On the obverse of 2018 South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang 1/10 oz Gold Medals is a depiction of Chiwoo as he rides his horse into battle. The skilled warrior is featured with an aggressive look on his face and a sword out to cut down his enemies.

The reverse design on the 2018 South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang 1/10 oz Gold Medal captures the image of Do ggae bi. This figure originated in the Silla Dynasty and is rumored to have the ability to keep evil at bay.
