The American Gold Eagle’s obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ towering figure of freedom and democracy known as Lady Liberty. She strides away from the sun and the US Capitol building as she raises a radiant torch in her right hand to guide the nation toward an ever-brighter future. She carries the olive branch of peace in her left hand. A circle of 50 stars surrounds her image with “LIBERTY” inscribed within them.
Created by Miley Busiek in 1986, the reverse depicts a male bald eagle returning to its nest while grasping an olive branch in its talons. The female eagle safeguards the young hatchlings and awaits his return. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are engraved on the reverse with the coin’s weight, purity, and legal tender value.
