Barbados is a former British colony island in the Caribbean Sea. Located deep in the Caribbean closer to South America than it is to North America, Barbados was once one of the many pivotal islands in the sugarcane trade that proved to be an economic driver for the region. Barbados gained its independence from England in 1965.
Obverse
On the obverse face of the 2019 Barbados Trident 1 oz Silver Coin, you will find the national coat of arms for Barbados. The seal includes a shield with the national flower in the upper two corners and the bearded fig tree in the center. The shield is supported on either side by a dolphin fish and pelican, with a Medieval knights helmet topping the shield. A hand emerges from the helmet with a fest clutching two sugarcanes representing the previous economic driver for the island.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2019 Barbados Trident Silver Coin includes a depiction of the Trident head. Featured prominently in the national flag, the trident head is broken off from the shaft as a symbol of the nations successful break from England in gaining its independence. This side of the coin has a background field that revives the original 2017 wave lines as a background element.
History
Introduced in 2017, the Barbados Trident Silver Coins are available with beaded edge fields on both sides of the coin. While the obverse has a smoother, slightly brushed background appearance, these coins have the wavy lines symbolizing the importance of the sea and oceans to Barbados. The 2018 issue in between 2017 and 2019 had a hammered background field instead.
