Nutcrackers originated as wood carvings created by a puppet-maker in 15^th-century Germany. The puppet-maker carved some figures as nutcrackers with a lever in the mouth as part of a contest to create a doll capable of cracking nuts. These types of nutcrackers were a symbol of good luck in Germany and the figures had a large mouth with a lever in back to operate the mouth nut-cracking element.
