Designed by sculptor Adolph Weinman, the obverse features the full-length figure of Lady Liberty walking proudly towards a rising sun and the nation's bright future. Her shoulders are wrapped in the billowing American flag, with her right hand extended toward the horizon. She carries laurel branches in her left arm, symbolizing America’s civic and military greatness. This iconic design is boldly engraved with the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” along with the year of issue.
The American Silver Eagle’s captivating, symmetrical reverse, designed by former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, hearkens to the great seal of the United States. A heraldic eagle with outstretched wings carries a banner in its beak that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM (out of many, one)”. It clutches the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war in its talons. A striped shield protects the great bird, while 13 stars representing the original colonies soar above its head. Also included are inscriptions of the coin’s weight, purity, and legal tender value.
