In 1996, Australia’s Perth Mint began a series of gold coins celebrating the Chinese zodiac. The inaugural Year of the Mouse began a 12-year cycle featuring a new animal each year. The first 12 years were called the Lunar I Series. In 2008, the 12-animal cycle restarted to create the Lunar II Series.
These spectacular gold coins pay tribute to the Year of the Pig, the last of the 12 animals in the ancient Chinese 12-year zodiac cycle. The birth years for people ruled by the Chinese Lunar pig include 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 and 2019. Those born in the lunar Year of the Pig are said to be honest, generous, and kind. Each 1/2 oz coin is beautifully struck from .9999 fine gold and is issued as Australian legal tender with a face value of 50 Australian dollars.
The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley likeness of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. “2019”, 50 dollars, and the weight and purity are also shown on the obverse of each coin.
The reverse of this 1/2 oz Gold Lunar coin features a sow underneath a floral canopy. The Chinese character for “pig”, “Year of the Pig” and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark are engraved around the image.
