Obverse

Unlike Mr. Clarks design for the Royal Mint of Englands latest portrait, this image includes the Queens neckline and shoulders. This marks the first time since 1966 those features have been included in Her Majestys portrait.

Reverse

In the immediate foreground, you will notice the large footprint left by one of the two American astronauts that descended to the lunar surface and spent time exploring the moon. In the background, you see the Eagle lunar lander that transported Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin from the command module down to the lunar surface and back again.

History

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued a challenge to the American people that the nation should commit itself to victory in the space race. The Soviet Union had struck the first major blow with the successful launch and orbit of its Sputnik satellite, but in July 1969, the Americans struck the deciding blow in sending men to the moon and returning them safely to Earth.
