The 150th anniversary of the discovery of the largest gold nugget in Australian history is in 2019. The impressive gold nugget was found in Bulldog Gully in Moliagul, Victoria, Australia, on February 5, 1869. It was only three 3 cm below the surface of the earth. To celebrate this amazing discovery, the Perth Mint released the original Australian Gold Nugget coins in the 1980s. For the 150th anniversary, the coins are back for a special release. Today, you can purchase the 2019 Australian Gold Nugget 1 oz Coin from Provident Metals in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

These unique coins were created to honor the Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget that was found by John Deason on February 5, 1869. He was poking around at the base of a tree in Victoria, Australia, when he found the large gold nugget, which was 66 kilograms. At the time, the nugget was worth 10,000 pounds. Today, that would be equivalent to between $3 and $4 million.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2019 Australian Gold Nugget 1 oz Coin, you will see the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. On these coins, she is shown in the sixth-generation design used on Australian coinage. The image was created by Jody Clark. The image is very similar to his English depiction of the Queen that was unveiled in 2016. The main differences can be seen at the Queens neckline and shoulders.

Reverse

The reverse of these coins bears the image of a replication of the shape of the Welcome Stranger Gold Nugget. Unfortunately, the gold nugget is no longer intact. When Deason and his friend brought the nugget to a local bank to weight it, it had to be split over an anvil because it was too big to weight on the banks scale.

History

The Perth Mint creates Australias official bullion. It is owned by the Government of Western Australia and has been creating coins since 1899. Perth Mint mints both coins and bars made from both native and sourced precious metals.
