Obverse

The obverse side of 2019 Australian Shipwreck Batavia 1 oz Gold Coins includes the depiction of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. The Queen is featured in the top of the triangle in the Jody Clark sixth-generation depiction for Australian coins. Debuting in 2018 and 2019 on Australian coins, it showcases the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. Below her, a dramatic scene plays out as the Batavia hits a coral reef off the Australian coast and the survivors who didnt drown scramble ashore fighting amongst themselves.

Reverse

On the reverse of 2019 Australian Shipwreck Batavia Gold Coins is an image of the Batavia as it appeared when it was finished at the shipyards in Amsterdam. Owned by the Dutch East Indies Company, the ship set sail on its maiden voyage in October 1628 and shipwrecked off the coast of Australian just months later in June 1629.

History

The Batavia was named for the colonial city of Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. The city is known today as Jakarta in the modern nation of Indonesia. The city itself was a colonial city for 320 years until 1949. The city had been held by the Japanese during World War II. The city endured with the name Batavia much longer than the ship.

Ordering

These 2019 Australian Shipwreck Batavia 1 oz Gold Coins are unique in design. The triangular shape is one thing, but if you view the coins with the text engravings on the reverse upright, you will see the ship Batavia in its final resting place: upside down at the bottom of the ocean.
