At Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation, ten statues called The Queen’s Beasts stood guard at the entrance to Westminster Abbey. Each creature represented a thread in the young queen’s ancient tapestry of royal heritage that passed down to her on that historic day. In 2016, the Royal Mint reincarnated these ten royal guardians in a beautiful new coin series called The Queen’s Beasts. Each new release explores one of these ten fantastical protectors and the centuries-old story they have to tell.
The 5th release in the Queen’s Beasts 10-coin series commemorates the powerful Black Bull of Clarence. The bull was passed to Queen Elizabeth II through the first Yorkist king Edward IV, who was a key figure in the 15th-century Wars of the Roses. The bull first appeared as a symbol of power and might on the Royal Arms in the 1560’s under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The bull now looms large in 10 oz of .9999 fine silver and bears a face value of 10 pounds backed by the British government. Add this stunning Silver Bull to your Queen’s Beast collection today!

Like most British sovereign coins, the obverse displays coin artist Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth portrait of Her Majesty to be used on coinage during her historically long reign. Inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II, D.G. REG. F.D., 10 POUNDS", and the designer’s initials surrounding the image.
The reverse of this 10 oz Silver coin features Jody Clark’s rendering of the Black Bull of Clarence. It rears up on its hind legs behind the royal shield. Inscriptions read “Black Bull of Clarence”, the year of issue, and the metal weight and purity.
