Each 2019 Chinese Kiangnan Dragon 1 oz Gold Coin available here is shipped in an individual capsule. As the first coin in a series of eight reimagined designs from historic Chinese currency, this piece is a restrike of the original 1904 Kiangnan Silver Dragon Dollar. The Chinese Mint issued only 100 of these coins.
Obverse
The obverse side of 2019 Chinese Kiangnan Dragon Gold Coins features a dragon modeled after the 1904 design. Kiangnan dragons were often shown with traits linking them to aquatic life, such as fewer claws and fish-like details. These dragons were seen as guardians of water and bringers of seasonal rain, both vital for farming in the region.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2019 Kiangnan Dragon 1 oz Gold Coin, youll find inscriptions that match those of the original 1904 Chinese Silver Dollar. In addition, modern laser etching on the coins rim shows the year, weight, and purity for this restrike edition.
History
The Kiangnan dragon is a lesser-known symbol from Chinese folklore, specifically tied to the Jiangnan region located south of the Yangtze River. Unlike the imperial dragons associated with northern China and royal power, the Kiangnan dragon has strong ties to the local landscape and water systems. In this region, the dragon was believed to influence rainfall and flooding, essential for life in this fertile agricultural area.
