The St. Helena Trade Dollar Series is an impressive, low-mintage collection of silver coins that recreate the images used on silver Trade Dollars by nations throughout the world in the mid- to late-19th century. After the conclusion of the Opium Wars, Chinese ports were forced open to the outside world and a flood of international trade rushed in. To better facilitate trade in these new ports, nations began issuing silver Trade Dollars to avoid the hassle of converting currencies. Today, you have a chance to get the 2019 Chinese Trade Dollar 1 oz Silver Coin online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Trade dollars had an interesting, but largely short-lived history, in the Asia-Pacific region. As nations with colonial interests in the area, such as Britain, Spain, France, and the Netherlands, conducted business in newly opened Chinese ports, there needed to be an easy means of completing commercial transactions with Chinese merchants, Japanese merchants, and American merchants also rushing to take advantage of the now-opened Chinese ports. As such, each nation began to strike its own version of a Trade Dollar, with most based on the weights and standards of the Spanish dollar that dominated the region and much of the globe at the time.
Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of these 2019 Chinese Trade Dollar 1 oz Silver Coins. Her Majesty is seen here in the fifth-generation right-profile portrait as created in 2015 by Jody Clark. She is depicted at the age of 89 and is wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown, an incredible crown commissioned in 1820 that includes 1,333 diamonds in total in its design and weighs more than 300 karats.
Reverse
A traditional Chinese dragon is featured in the center of the reverse field on the 2019 Chinese Trade Dollar 1 oz Silver Coin. This design is based on the actual trade dollars the Chinese Empire of the late-19th century issued following the opening of its ports. The design includes the same oriental-themed border from the obverse and inscriptions of The East India Company and Trade Dollar.
History
The design on the reverse comes directly from a silver Trade Dollar released in 1889 by the Empress Dowager Cixi. She was the last empress of the Qing Dynasty in China and was responsible for modernizing the empires economy and currency following the defeats in the Opium Wars.
