The first-ever release of the Silver Krugerrand was in 2017. The South African Mint and Rand Refinery teamed up to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the massively popular Gold Krugerrand coins. Also released in 2017 was a commemorative coin, premium uncirculated silver Krugerrand issued along with another first in the series, a platinum Krugerrand.

In 2018, the South African Mint decided to ensure the South African Silver Krugerrand became a regular-issued bullion coin for investors. In 2019, the second year of availability, the Silver Krugerrand is offered with interesting enhancements that include gilded layers and colorized lacquers.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 2019 Colorized South African Krugerrand 1 oz Silver Coin features the portrait of Paul Kruger. Kruger was amongst the leading Boers who worked to fight for freedom from the British rule. Paul Kruger later went on to serve the new Republic of South Africa as president in the late 19th century.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2019 Colorized South African Krugerrand 1 oz Silver Coin features the image of the national animal of South Africa, the Springbok antelope. The Springbok is shown with a colorized finish. The application of colorized lacquer brings the design to life. It also adds lovely natural tones on the antelope and the background depicting the arid plains of South Africa.
