The national seal for the Somali Republic features a crowned shield supported by leopards on either side and featuring crossed fern leaves and spears below draped in a ribbon cloth. The crowned shield has a background field of horizontal lines with a single star in the center of the field.

Reverse

An African bush elephant is depicted on the reverse side of these 2019 Gilded Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins. The bush elephant is shown here near the banks of a winding river as it uses its trunk to reach up to the canopy of a large tree for some food. The sun looms in the sky in the distance as a bird flies overhead. This side of the coin has the only application of 24-karat gold on this coin. This is limited to the body of the African bush elephant only.

History

Gilded silver coins feature a very thin layer of 24-karat gold that is meant to create visual contrast between select design elements and the background field of the coin. The application of the gold is not enough in weight to change the precious metal value of the coin, but the limited use of it in each design release does add collectible value to each coin.
