The 2019 Proof Delaware Lenni Lenape Blue Hen 1 oz Silver Coin belongs to the Native American Mint Proof Silver Dollar Series. This collection of interesting coins each represents a different state in the United States and features the indigenous tribe that originally once called those states home. Also featured on the coins are animal species that are native to that part of the region, or animals that hold special meaning to the tribe itself. The coins contain 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and have been issued a $1 face value. The coins are not considered to be legal tender in the United States, but they are backed by the issuing tribe.

Prior to the arrival of Europeans along the North American Eastern seaboard, the people of the Lenni Lenape people occupied one of the greatest areas of land. Historically speaking, the tribe occupied the woodlands of southeastern Canada down through the Delaware River watershed, New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, New York City, western Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley. After the Revolutionary War and American independence, the United States government forced many of the Lenape people to relocate into the designated Indian Territory that is today the US state of Oklahoma.
Obverse
The obverse design of the 2019 Proof Delaware Lenni Lenape Blue Hen 1 oz Silver Coin features the image of a proud member of the Lenape indigenous tribe. The Lenape people are today found living across three different areas, each of which is beyond where their historical homelands once were. The largest population of the more than 16,000 members of the tribe can be found in Oklahoma, where the tribe was relocated by the American government. Other members of the tribe can be found living in Wisconsin and the Canadian province of Ontario.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 2019 Proof Delaware Lenni Lenape Blue Hen 1 oz Silver Coin features the image of a type of chicken known as the Delaware Blue Hen. This bird is not technically considered to be a breed of chicken. It is actually a variety of the American gamecock. In 1939 the State of Delaware adopted the Blue Hen as its official state bird.
