Obverse
In the obverse design element of the 2019 Proof Netherlands Lion Silver Dollar is the rampant lion. This left-profile depiction of the Dutch Republic Lion was introduced on the circulation Dutch Lion Dollar in 1651 and features an inscription of the motto of the United Provinces. In Dutch, this inscription says Confidens.Dno.Non.Movetvr. In English, it translates as Who trusts in the Lord is not moved. There are two beaded borders on this side as well, one immediately around the lion and another at the very edge of the design rim.
Reverse
For the reverse field of 2019 Proof Netherlands Lion 1 oz Silver Dollars, the Royal Dutch Mint offers an image of a Dutch knight. The Dutch knight is featured behind a shield with a rampant lion on its surface. The shield is reflective of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the nation of Belgium. The Netherlands gained its independence in 1813 and when William I became King of the Netherlands, his kingdom initially included modern-day Belgium. In 1839, Belgium gained its own independence and would use the same shield as the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
History
The design of the Dutch Lion Dollar, and now the modern Netherlands Lion Silver Dollar, is based on the rampant lion image first used on the badge of the Union of Utrecht. The seal was also used by the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands and served as a predecessor to the modern coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
