2017 marked the 400^th anniversary of the release of the lion dollar by a central Dutch mint. The first strike of the design actually came from the province of Holland in 1575 as it fought for its independence. By the 17^th century though, six of the seven provinces of the Netherlands were issuing the lion dollar. It was also issued by German and Italian cities. Merchants would use the Dutch lion dollar in the Middle East, in the Dutch East Indies, and eventually in British North America. In fact, the colonies of Maryland, Massachusetts, and New York regularly saw the lion dollar in circulation on a daily basis.

Obverse

History

The modern Royal Dutch Mint traces its roots to the founding of the Utrecht Mint in 1567. The modern mint is located in Houten, the Netherlands. The mint issues these coins today with a Certificate of Authenticity bearing the name and signature of Stephan Satijn, the mint master of the Royal Dutch Mint.
