The Silver Dollar Series pays tribute to the indigenous tribes on the North American continent and parts of Canada. The Chinook peoples were amongst the last to have encountered European explorers and settlers. The series of coins pay tribute to the tribe, the state that they were historically found in and an animal that was native to the region or otherwise important to the tribe. The 2019 Proof Washington Chinook Marmot 1 oz Silver Coin contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and has been issued a face value of $1. The coin is fully backed by the Chinook Indian Nation, but is not considered legal tender in the United States.

Highlights:

  • Delivered secured in a protective plastic capsule!
  • 27thdesign in Proof Silver Dollar Series, and final design for 2019!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Face value of One Dollar, backed by the Chinook Indian Nation. Not legal US tender.
  • Obverse features the image of a member of the Chinook tribe.
  • Reverse features image of a marmot.

The Chinook people, also referred to as Chinookan people or the Chinook Indian Nation, is a group of several indigenous tribes in the Pacific Northwest. These people are connected by their shared language and lived along the Lower and Middle Columbia Rivers in Oregon, as well as from Tillamook Head north to Willapa Bay in southwestern Washington state.

The Chinook Indian Nation as it exists today is not a federally recognized tribe. The nation had been granted that status during the Clinton administration, but had it revoked during the administration of President George W. Bush. The Chinook Indian Nation is working to regain that status and it represents a collective of five tribes: Lower Chinook, Clatsop, Willapa, Wahkiakum, and Kathlamet.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 2019 Proof Washington Chinook Marmot 1 oz Silver Coin features the portrait of a member of the Chinook people. There are indigenous people speaking Chinookan languages that exist in federally recognized tribes, including the Yakima Nation and the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation. Today, more than 2,700 people identify as Chinook and they can still be found predominantly in the states of Oregon and Washington.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2019 Proof Washington Chinook Marmot 1 oz Silver Coin features a marmot. The marmot is a member of the squirrel family. The rodent is large and has short but robust legs. They were often trapped and used as a source of food by the people of the Chinook tribe.

Your 2019 Proof Washington Chinook Marmot 1 oz Silver Coin features mirrored background fields and frosted design sets, as is typical of coins that are considered to be a proof.
