The Spade Guinea was a popular gold coin first issued by the United Kingdom in the 17th Century. Made of approximately one quarter ounce of gold and originally worth one pound sterling, the Guinea became a potent symbol of Britain’s colonial power and a widely-used form of currency around the world for over 100 years.
The St Helena 1 oz Silver Spade Guinea, now in it’s 2nd year of issue, pays tribute to the historic spade guinea coin that was minted by the United Kingdom in 1787. The obverse and reverse design fields feature the distinct pattern of the East India Trading Company, representing the fact the the Guinea was traded widely by merchants on East India Company ships. Hold a piece of history in the palm of your hand by adding this coin to your order today!
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by internationally renowned sculptor Raphael Maklouf, the issuing country St. Helena, the denomination 1 pound, and the year of issue.
The reverse features the Spade Guinea Shield representing the heraldry of the royal house of Hanover. The shield depicts the lions of England and Scotland in the upper left quadrant, the three lilies of France in the upper-right, the harp of Ireland in the lower left, and the white horse of Hanover in the lower right. The coin’s weight, purity, and the East India Company mint mark are also inscribed.
Saint Helena is a small British Island territory in the south Atlantic Ocean. The second-oldest British Overseas Territory behind Bermuda, the island was an important refueling port for East India Company ships on route to the East. Today, St Helena and The East India Company issue precious metal coinage for collectors and investors alike.

"
This is probably one of the nicest coins ever minted. No, I don't mean this year or from this particular country, or mint. I mean it is one of the nicest coins ever minted. It's beauty, intricacy, and detail are on par with some of my favorite Silver Britannias from the early 2000's. The proofing on the inset text within the frosted border is stunning. What appears to be a laser etched artwork pattern is the backdrop of both side of the coin - it's an amazing feature. The obverse has one of the most attractive and detailed renditions of the queen that I have seen. The intricacy of the engraving on the shield on the reverse is totally impressive. Even the little raised dots that go around the perimeter of the coin are proofed and looks amazing. This coin is really a stunning achievement. Bravo to the designer, the engraver, and the mint for bringing this to the public. It truly is art."

"
This coin is nice. They played around a bit with a dull and shiny mixture in the design. The Perth mint does a similar mix in design but it's too dull. This coin however has a good balance between the dull and the shine. A beautiful coin indeed and one that I plan to buy many more of in the future. I like the little etching in the background of the design too. I think it's there as an anti-counterfeit marking letting you know from the moment you see it that it is legitimate.. I say this is a pretty good product."
