The reverse face of these coins features the image of the Springbok antelope in right-profile relief. The antelope is shown leaping across the plains of South Africa. The antelope and the ground are covered in a thin layer of gold, which creates visual contrast.

History

When Krugerrands were originally released in 1967, only gold coins were available. The silver version of these coins was first introduced in 2017 to mark the 50^th anniversary of the gold coins release. The initial release coins were called Premium Uncirculated coins and a mintage cap was set pretty low. All of the original coins were marked with commemorative dates. Since the coins were so popular, the South African Mint made the coins a regular issue and created brilliant uncirculated versions for future releases.
